“Trick or Treat” times, dates and Halloween safety tips

Trick or treat for Columbus and most surrounding areas is scheduled for Thursday, October 31, between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The Columbus Division of Police will provide a watchful eye but encourage everyone to exercise caution.

Here are a few Halloween safety tips to follow:

• Adults should accompany young children and older kids should travel in groups.
• Children should wear light colored clothing short enough to prevent tripping. Adding reflective tape to costumes and outer garments will increase visibility.
• Carry and use flashlights or glow sticks after dark.
• Visit homes you know and stay within your neighborhood. Together with your child, map out a safe route so you know where they will be. Remind them not to take short cuts through backyards, alleys or fields.
• Remind children never to enter a stranger’s house or vehicle.
• Encourage neighborhood block watches and citizens’ groups to patrol the neighborhood.
• Drive slowly and schedule trips so as to avoid the times of heavy pedestrian traffic.
• Discourage children from eating their treats until they get home.
• Closely check all treats at home is a well-lit place. Remove all opened candies or treats not in their original wrappers. Inspect all fruit and homemade goodies.
• Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police immediately.

Suspected Armed Robber Shot

Columbus Police are investigating a shooting involving two officers and a man suspected of armed robbery.
On November 5, 2013, at approximately 7:49 am, Columbus Police responded to 2827 Bethel Road on the report of an armed robbery.

Officers arrived and aired a description of the suspect and his vehicle, a black Pontiac, on the police radio channel.

Dublin Police were monitoring the Columbus Police radio channel and notified Columbus officers of an armed car-jacking they were investigating which occurred approximately an hour earlier involving a suspect similar in description. Dublin investigators developed information their suspect might be returning to the area of W. Broad Street and Hague Avenue. This information was given to officers on the west side who began searching for the suspect and the stolen black Pontiac.

At approximately 8:43 am, a patrol officer observed the vehicle and the suspect in the area of N. Warren Avenue and Grace Street. The officer observed the suspect go into an abandoned garage and asked for assistance. Two undercover officers responded to the call for back-up and proceeded to enter the garage when they encountered the suspect. The suspect was shot multiple times during the confrontation and transported to Mount Carmel West Hospital in critical condition. No other injuries were reported. A pellet gun and cash were recovered at the scene.

The suspect has been identified but his name is being withheld pending further investigation into the armed robbery and confrontation near N. Warren Avenue and Grace Street.

As in all police involved shootings, the involved officer(s) will receive mandated psychological support counseling. Officers are also afforded an opportunity to take leave time to assist in recovery from a traumatic experience. This incident will be investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team (made up of specially trained investigators from the Homicide Squad), and the Firearms / Police-Involved Death Review Board. The final investigative package will be forwarded to the Columbus Division of Police, Chain-Of-Command for review.

Man Shot During Confrontation with Police

Columbus Police are investigating a shooting involving an officer and a man at a local hotel

On November 13, 2013, at approximately 7:27 pm, Columbus Police responded to 1313 St. James Lutheran Lane on the report of a man cutting himself. Upon arrival, officers approached a hotel room occupied by two men. The officers looked into the open room and were immediately confronted by a man who charged towards them with his hands in his waistband. The man ignored repeated commands to stop and show his hands.
One officer fired his weapon, striking the man once in the upper body. The man was transported to Mount Carmel West Hospital in stable condition. A pair of scissors was recovered at the scene. It appears alcohol may have played a factor in the shooting.

Knife Wielding Man Killed During Confrontation with Police

Columbus Police are investigating an early morning shooting involving officers and a knife wielding man on the city’s far west side.

On November 17, 2013, at approximately 5:09 am, Columbus Police received a call from a woman saying an unknown man with no shirt, wearing a camouflaged fishing hat, entered her unlocked apartment holding a knife. The woman told dispatchers she was able to lock the man out of the apartment when he stepped out the front door. She said the man was talking but not making sense. The man continued trying the door knob and knocking on the door trying to re-enter the apartment as the woman continued talking with the dispatcher.

An officer arrived and confronted the man near 5424 Tretorn Drive. The man charged at the officer with a knife and was shot at during the confrontation. It is unknown if the man was struck by gunfire. He fled from the area on foot.

Additional officers arrived and began looking for the man. Officers tracked the man to a nearby apartment complex where he once again confronted officers with a knife. Two officers fired at the man and followed him to the courtyard of 2156 Gables Lake Drive, where he collapsed. As they approached, they observed the man lying on the ground, shot multiple times, holding the knife to his throat. They disarmed him and took him into custody. Medics arrived and pronounced the man dead at 6:09 am. No other injuries were reported. Two knives were recovered at the scene. The suspect is identified as Jason D. White, M/B/31, and lives in the complex of the original incident.

Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

The holiday shopping season has officially started! The Columbus Division of Police is offering the following safety tips:
• Carry no more cash than absolutely necessary. If you are carrying cash, safeguard your money by carrying it in your front pocket. Never display a large amount of cash. If possible, pay by check, credit card or debit card.
• Take an inventory of your purse or wallet. Write down the phone numbers of your credit card providers. Carry the phone numbers separate from your purse or wallet. Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. Keep a record of all your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.
• Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
• Try to avoid carrying a purse or wallet. If you must carry a wallet, place it in your front pocket. If you are carrying a purse, carry it securely across your body. Never leave your purse unattended, open in a shopping cart, or on a counter.
• Always carry your driver’s license or identification card with you. Do not carry anything with you that you will not need. (I.e. social security card or extra credit cards you do not plan on using.)
• Shop in pairs or with a group.
• Don’t leave cell phones, purses, CD cases or other items of value in your vehicle where they can be seen. Always conceal items of value.
• Lock purchased merchandise in the trunk of your vehicle.
• Park in a well lit area and lock your vehicle. If you valet park, only leave the ignition key. Take your other keys with you.
• If you place your packages in the trunk and plan on more shopping, consider moving your vehicle to another location.
• Stay alert to your surroundings. Criminals step up their activities during the holidays. If you are approached by a stranger with a deal that sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Report any suspicious activity to the police at 645-4545.
• Report thefts immediately, no matter how insignificant. Police use crime reports to determine how to better serve the public.

Shooting Suspect Killed During Confrontation with Police

Columbus Police are investigating an early morning shooting involving officers and a man armed with a handgun on the city’s east side.

On December 12, 2013, at approximately 12:08 am, Columbus Police officers observed a man, identified as Kenneth R. Herring, standing on the porch of 719 S. 17th Street. Mr. Herring was wanted in connection with a late night shooting that occurred at 1196 Lockbourne Road.

Plainclothes officers initially went to the S. 17th Street address looking for Mr. Herring after receiving a tip he was at that location. Uniformed and plainclothes officers attempted to take Mr. Herring into custody when the shooting occurred. Five officers fired and struck Kenneth Herring multiple times. Medics arrived and pronounced him dead at 12:14 am. A handgun was recovered from the scene. Four people inside the residence were interviewed and later released. No other injuries were reported.

Officers were called to that location on a report that a man shot his girlfriend. The girlfriend, Richell Dixon, was transported to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Both shootings remain under investigation.
