Columbus Police Announce Patrol Reform Plan

In April of 2009, Columbus Police Chief Walter Distelzweig initiated a top to bottom review of
the Division of Police. Division personnel examined ten years of data regarding calls for service
and analyzed the Division’s current zone and precinct mapping. The assessment also included
community forums to gather input from citizens and allow them an opportunity to discuss
community concerns regarding policing in their neighborhoods. Future review of the Division
will continue throughout 2010 in an effort to again promote efficiencies and enhance safety for
citizens and officers.

The Patrol Reform Plan includes the following key points:
• Personnel reallocated based on calls for service during the week and peak hours each day.
• Add an additional precinct to increase the number of precincts from 19 to 20.
• Split the 14th Precinct (located on the far east side).
• Split the 18th Precinct (located on the far north side).
• Remaining precincts will be realigned to balance workload.
• Full staffing of community liaison and retention of bicycle/walking officers.
• More suitable spans of control for supervisors allowing for effective leadership and
direction to their assigned personnel.

After discussion with Division personnel, Division representatives will make themselves
available to community groups.
