Civilian Employment Opportunities
The Columbus Division of Police employs an authorized strength of 396 civilians in various job classifications. Civilians in these positions are assigned to each of the five subdivisions that comprise the Division: Administrative, Investigative, Patrol East and West, and Support Services. A description of each subdivision may be found on the organizational chart located on this webpage.
Through cooperative interaction with sworn personnel, community members, and other public and private agencies, civilians play a vital role in fulfilling the mission statement of the Division of Police. The mission statement is also located on this webpage.

Administrative Analyst II
Under direction, is responsible for performing analysis, recommendations, and consultation to management on diverse or complex issues having a fiscal, operational, or managerial impact. Performs related duties as required.
Administrative Secretary
Under direction, is responsible for serving as the confidential secretary to a position in the executive job family within the classified service. Performs related duties as required.
Crime Analyst I
Under general supervision, is responsible for researching, compiling, and analyzing information for the preparation of crime analysis reports. Performs related duties as required.
Crime Analyst II
Under general supervision, is responsible for serving as a working supervisor in the Crime Analysis Unit for the Division. Performs related duties as required.
Crime Laboratory Manager
Under direction, is responsible for managing the overall operation of the forensic laboratory of the Division. Performs related duties as required.
Criminalist I
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing entry-level professional physical, chemical, and biological analyses on physical evidence. Performs related duties as required.
Criminalist II
Under direction, is responsible for performing fully skilled professional physical, chemical, and biological analyses on physical evidence. Performs related duties as required.
Equipment Operator I
Under general supervision, is responsible for the operation of a variety of motorized equipment involving moderately difficult problems of operation. Performs related tasks as required.
Fingerprint Technician Trainee
Under immediate supervision, is responsible for learning to obtain and identify fingerprints. Performs related duties as required.
Fingerprint Technician I
Under general supervision, is responsible for obtaining and identifying fingerprints. Performs related duties as required.
Fingerprint Technician II
Under general direction, is responsible for supervising employees identifying individuals through fingerprints and/or responsible for identifying individuals through fingerprints. Performs related duties as required.
Firing Range Assistant
Under general supervision, is responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of a firing range. Performs related duties as required.
Fiscal Assistant II
Under direction, is responsible for performing advanced level fiscal and accounting support functions
Fiscal Manager
Under administrative direction, is responsible for directing the fiscal operations and activities for a department, division or agency of the city government; performs related duties as required.
Human Resources Program Manager
Under general direction, is responsible for administering an overall human resources program or a specialized program such as staffing, training, or labor relations. Performs related duties as required.
Laborer
Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing routine manual labor. Performs related duties as required.
Latent Print Examiner
Under general direction, is responsible for evaluating, comparing and identifying latent print evidence and serving as a latent print expert for the Division of Police. Performs related duties as required.
Latent Print Supervisor
Under general direction, is responsible for supervising and participating in the evaluation and identification of latent print evidence and serving as the manager for the overall operation of the Latent Print Unit. Performs related duties as required.
Mail Handler I
Under general supervision, is responsible for opening, sorting, delivering, and collecting mail. Performs related duties as required. Hourly salary range:
Office Assistant I
Under general supervision, is responsible for general and varied clerical tasks.
Office Assistant II
Under direction, is responsible for performing complex or specialized clerical functions.
Office Assistant III
Under direction, is responsible for performing advanced level office and administrative support
Office Support Clerk
Under immediate supervision, is responsible for routine and repetitive clerical duties.
Payroll / Benefits Clerk
Under direction, is responsible for performing payroll and/or benefit functions.
Photography Laboratory Manager
Under general direction, is responsible for managing the operation of a photography laboratory in the Division. Performs related duties as required.
Photography Technician
Under direction, is responsible for operating cameras, video, computer imaging, and/or photographic laboratory equipment. Performs related duties as required.
Police Communications Technician
Under general supervision, is responsible for receiving and evaluating incoming requests for emergency services (police, fire and medical), and dispatching police protection services. Performs related duties as required.
Police Communications Technician Supervisor
Under general direction, is responsible for supervising the operations of the Police Communications Center during an assigned shift. Performs related duties as required.
Police Property Clerk
Under general supervision, is responsible for receiving, storing, and releasing all property taken into custody by the Division. Performs related duties as required.
Police Records Technician
Under general supervision, is responsible for maintaining a complex system of police records. Performs related duties as required.
Police Records Technician Supervisor
Under general supervision, is responsible for supervising a group of Police Records Technicians. Performs related duties as required.
Polygraphist
Under general direction, is responsible for conducting polygraph examinations within the Division. Performs related duties as required.
Print Services Specialist
Under general supervision, is responsible for operating offset printing presses and modern reprographic systems to produce printed material according to job orders. Performs related duties as required.
Print Services Supervisor
Under direction, is responsible for producing forms and publications and supervising a duplicating services and print shop for the Division. Performs related duties as required.
Property Evidence Technician
Under general supervision, is responsible for identifying, collecting, and preserving physical evidence from property crime scenes. Performs related duties as required.
Public Information Assistant
Under general supervision, is responsible for the preparation and dissemination of news stories, articles, publicity materials, and related media concerning a municipal project, department, division, or agency. Performs related duties as required.
Safety Program Manager
Under direction, is responsible for developing, managing, and evaluating a safety program for a department or division. Performs related duties as required.
Secretary
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing secretarial duties for an individual or work unit. Performs related duties as required.
Security Specialist
Under general supervision, is responsible for observing and guarding city property and controlling access to buildings and facilities. Performs related duties as required.
Storekeeper
Under general supervision, is responsible for receiving and issuing supplies or parts, and maintaining stock inventory. Performs related duties as required.
Vehicle Impounding Inspector
Under general supervision, is responsible for investigating junk and abandoned vehicle complaints and processing the impoundment or removal of these vehicles and court ordered immobilization. Performs related duties as required.
