Deputy
Chief John M. Rockwell Deputy Chief Rockwell is a 33-year veteran of the Columbus Division of Police. He is currently in charge of the Patrol East/Homeland Security Subdivision. He has held previous assignments in Patrol, SWAT, Inspections, Juvenile Violence/Gang Task Force, Training and Narcotics. In the past, he has also worked extensively with Labor Relations, City Hall, Civil Service and City Attorney liaison.
Deputy Chief Rockwell holds a BA in Political Science from The Ohio State University and has a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University. He also graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1989.
As Homeland Security Coordinator for the City of Columbus, he has actively worked with other individuals and agencies throughout the country to formulate security strategies to deal with domestic and international threats. This includes constant contact and collaboration with Federal, State and local law enforcement, fire, EMA and health interests. He was also instrumental in working with the Major City Chief’s Organization in developing suggested national policies and protocols. In 2004, and again in 2006, Deputy Chief Rockwell traveled to Turkey to work with the Turkish National Police on terrorist related concerns.
Deputy Chief Rockwell has also been socially active in the community. He is a board member of the Coalition Against Family Violence and served on the Board of Trustees for the Avis House for six years. He and his wife have worked in the past with troubled children via the Big Brothers/Sisters program and most recently with the Promise Team, an affiliate of Volunteers of America. Deputy Chief Rockwell was also presented with the 2002 Mayor’s Humanitarian Award for working with medical, dental, and construction teams in Honduras.
